Becoming Independent

Another real story of one of our clients. Fatima [not her real name] arrived in the USA with her seven month old baby. Her husband couldn’t accompany her due to immigration issues. Covid19 made the situation worse and Fatima was unable to find a job or a place to stay.  Fatima was living in a car with her baby when she called Niswa.  Fatima is now living with her daughter in housing provided by Niswa. Staff at Niswa are providing assistance with immigration for Fatima’s husband. Fatima is looking for a job with Niswa’s help. Mother and baby are safe and the family will be reunited soon.

Tania [not her real name] was newly married but quickly realized that her husband was abusive. There was no hope of reconciliation. Living in a foreign country Tania needed help leaving her husband while maintaining her path to citizenship. Tania was able to leave an abusive situation with Niswa’s assistance. Niswa provided Tania with shelter, assisted her with finding employment and provided legal assistance to gain citizenship. Tania also obtained a divorce with legal aid through Niswa. Today, Tania is happily married with a child.

Niswa received a call from Rupi Kaur [not her real name] who was brave enough to leave an abusive relationship. Rupi like so many other women was new to this country and didn’t have family to turn to.  Fortunately Rupi connected with us. Niswa provided Rupi with shelter, and assisted her with finding employment. Rupi  eventually returned to her home country with Niswa’s help.

Niswa rescued Naz [not her real name] from the doors of death. Niswa received a call from the hospital as Naz had attempted suicide due to the abuse she had suffered in an abusive relationship. Naz was an immigrant and had no family or friends to turn to.  Niswa provided Naz with  counseling, and a shelter. Once Naz was in a stable situation, Niswa helped her return to her home country to be reunited with her loved ones.
